"This is the latest book from Jan Maizler who is a past world record holder and has many years fishing inshore light tackle around the world. This writing is a complete summary on sea trout. The book goes in depth on the habits and the types of tackle. There is a section, more of a clinic on line to line connections and the various artificial and natural baits used. Well suited for the novice or veteran fisherman and should be part of a tackle bag inventory for everyone".
-Captain Karl Gloeckner
“Despite having fished seatrout for years, I hadn’t any idea how much I didn’t know until I read Maizler’s definitive new work on the species.”—Doug Olander, editor in chief, Sport Fishing Magazine

“Maizler’s name has been inexorably linked to seatrout for decades. This book is an overdue, welcome, and essential addition to our angling literature. Kudos to the master!”—Glenn Law, executive editor, Salt Water Sportsman Magazine

“From seatrout habits to state-by-state seatrout fishing techniques, Maizler covers everything one needs to know with regard to becoming a successful angler for this popular species.”—Tommy L. Thompson, author of The Saltwater Angler’s Guide to Tampa Bay and Southwest Florida

Known as “everyman’s fish,” the spotted seatrout is one of the top ten species for recreational fishing in the United States.

In Fishing for Spotted Seatrout, Jan Maizler, a world-renowned light tackle expert, shares more than 30 years’ experience and innovative tactics for catching this popular fish in its range from the Carolinas to Texas. For beginners, he offers an overview of the unique characteristics and habits of the spotted seatrout. For more seasoned fishermen, he presents an in-depth analysis of the different tackle, baits, techniques, and tidal conditions for achieving the best catches. A chapter on weather and season will help ensure angling success, regardless of conditions the calendar brings.

Maizler discusses chumming—a technique widely applied in other fisheries but mostly unknown for seatrout—and recommends the paddleboard, the newest vessel for hunting the spotted king. He also explores region-specific practices like wading, prevalent in Texas, and trolling live shrimp, common in Biloxi Marsh, and argues that their use can and should extend beyond these regions. Moreover, he demonstrates how to apply these new techniques on your next fishing expedition.
Covering every aspect of angling for this magnificent gamefish, Maizler’s comprehensive guide belongs on your bookshelf and in your tackle bag.

REVIEWS

"Few places on earth offer better opportunities for "flats," or shallow ocean fishing, than Florida. But to be successful, shallow water marine angling requires training and discipline, traits exemplified by Jan S. Maizler, a world champion angler who has already penned several books on the topic. Fishing Florida's Flats proves his modesty. Though he himself has more than 45 years of flats fishing experience, Maizler draws generously on the expertise of numerous other "flatsmasters. Peerless fishing wisdom."

Captain Ted Lund, Editor of Fly Fishing in Salt Waters Magazine says, "Fishing Florida's Flats" is perhaps one of the finest books on regional angling nuances ever written. Jan Maizler has put together a talented stable of writers willing to bare their secrets to success in the Florida Shallows. It is a worthwhile addition to any angling library even the least bit concerned with Florida's flats environment."

World-renowned shallow water angling expert, author, writer, and columnist Frank Sargeant of the Tampa Tribune says, "Fishing Florida's Flats is a book loaded with information on the fine points of flats fishing for bonefish, tarpon, and permit, among other species. Author Jan Maizler taps the expertise of some of the nation's top flats guides and adds his own decades of knowledge to it. Whether you're a beginner or expert, you'll find lots of tips, tricks, and knowledge here."

Veteran outdoor and travel writer/ photographer, the legendary M. Timothy O’Keefe is the editor of UPF’s Wild Florida Series. Here are some excerpts of his introductory comments on this book. “Fishing Florida’s Flats” is… the most thorough body of work ever assembled about Florida flats game fishing and all of it is provided by the top experts. “ Fishing Florida’s Flats”…deserves to become a classic reference…never presented before with such impeccable authority.”

"Jan Maizler's book offers plenty of detail on the fishing and makes you want to get out on the water to put that knowledge into practice."
Jimmy Jacobs, Editor | Florida Game & Fish

From VisitFlorida.com, the state's official source for travel planning: "Meanwhile, Jan S. Maizler’s Fishing Florida’s Flats (University Press of Florida, 2007) takes readers from the days of outdoors writer Zane Grey to today, all in search of bonefish, tarpon and permit. It’s filled with juicy information; who but a veteran fisherman could describe the tarpon’s hunger for the tasty palolo worm, found in coral reefs, thusly: “It sips the worm in; it is so delicate to see a hundred-pound fish do this.”

"An extremely detailed and thorough book that no serious shallow water angler will be able to pass up." --John D. Brownlee, Editor in-Chief, SaltWater Sportsman Magazine

"Excellent. . . . Maizler has compiled a world of interesting detail." --Jim Hardie, freelance writer for the Miami Herald, Stuart News, and Florida Fishing Week
